Project Reveal: Spacious Deck Renovation in Coatesville, PA

Our clients approached us with a tough situation. They had their deck renovated last year by another contractor and were unhappy with the result. In fact they were so concerned with the deck build that they did not use it once the entirety of last season. We went straight to work, visiting the very next day to begin assessing and determining a path forward. Upon reviewing the existing deck, we noted visible sagging in the deck boards, uneven and non-straight railings, support posts that were cut and spliced together, and a deck that had a difference of 2-1/2 inches in depth from one side to the other, just to name a few.

Our clients asked us to do what is possible to save the existing finish material such as the composite decking and railing since it was just under a year old but ultimately wanted a deck they could use and feel comfortable doing so.

Our Process & Project Launch

We presented two options for the deck. Option 1 was to modify the existing framing stiffening the joists, replacing support posts, etc. Option 2 and the choice of the clients, was to dismantle the existing deck, discard the existing framing and start over, but reuse the deck boards. We filed for permits the very next week, ordered material and got to work dismantling 2 weeks later. Then the material delivery delays hit and were rescheduled twice causing a week delay however our team worked relentlessly on this deck build through the weekends to maintain the schedule we promised to our clients.

Deck Renovation Revealed

The final product was a flat, level and truly square deck as it should be. Most importantly, we were able to re use the existing finishes and create a space for their family to enjoy for years to come. Prior to the start of the deck renovation, we assisted the homeowners in getting the required letters and approvals from their HOA to allow the work to occur reaching out directly on their behalf. Before we showed up and before any improvements, our clients noted “you have already gone above and beyond our expectations and we look forward to working with you.” If we must say so ourselves, this is what you should look for in a contractor, this is what Grey Noll Designs strives for.
